In Kozhikode, amidst concerns in Malappuram district over a Nipah infection death, a man from Othayi in Edavanna panchayat has been hospitalized at Manjeri Govt Medical College with suspected symptoms of Mpox, an illness caused by the monkeypox virus. The 38-year-old man, who recently returned from Dubai, sought medical help at the college for fever and rashes on Monday. Due to his symptoms and travel history, he was admitted and is currently under observation. Samples have been sent for testing at Kozhikode Govt Medical College Hospital with results expected by Wednesday evening. Health minister Veena George confirmed the case and stated that the man isolated himself upon returning home as a precaution. Close family members are advised to remain vigilant, according to Malappuram DMO Dr R Renuka. The World Health Organization has declared Mpox a public health emergency due to the emergence of a new strain. Although a case was reported in India on Sept 9, it was identified as a different strain from previous cases.The ongoing public health emergency as reported by the WHO pertains to Clade 1 of Monkeypox (Mpox). Mpox is caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the Poxviridae family. The virus has two distinct clades: Clade I (with subclades 1a and 1b) and Clade 2 (with subclades 2a and 2b). Mpox can spread through close contact with infected individuals, contaminated materials, or infected animals. Common symptoms of Mpox include rashes, fever, sore throat, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
